為配合紀念「七七抗戰」暨慶祝空軍「八一四」勝利八十週年，空軍司令部23日將辦理花蓮空軍基地營區開放，並透過各項兵力展示、園遊會及地區國軍人才招募等內容，強化民眾對全民國防支持與認同。 這次營區開放活動預料將是S-2T反潛機退役前，最後在民眾面前公開展出。
花蓮空軍基地營區開放，19日舉行全兵力預演，並邀請媒體採訪。營區開放活動項目，包括空軍雷虎小組7機特技操演、經國號(IDF)、幻象2000與F-16三型主力單機戰機性能操演、陸軍特戰部隊表演、地面裝備靜態展示等。
在靜態展演項目，包括經國號、幻象2000、F-16、P-3C反潛機、S-2T反潛機、AH-1W眼鏡蛇攻擊直升機、AH-64E阿帕契攻擊直升機、RF-5F偵察機等陳展。
其中，編號2220的S-2T反潛機是空軍最後一架現役的同型機，機鼻漆有鯊魚嘴圖案而被稱為「鯊魚機」。由於空軍將於2017年底全面換裝P-3C反潛機，將所有S-2T退役，11月25日雖然在新竹空軍基地也將有營區開放活動，但是空軍未透露S-2T是否會參加，因此23日花蓮基地開放預料將是S-2T最後一次在國人面前公開亮相。
